One back. Five minutes. Not a single step. Less has never been more.

In this short dance solo I explore a simple idea: working with the unique anatomy of my own body – a minimalist performance with a clear, reduced aesthetic.

For the entire performance I keep my back to the audience and never travel through the space. All movement happens on my back: through the manipulation of my hypermobile shoulder blades and precise muscle isolations, micro- and macro-movements, an abstract, hypnotic narrative emerges. After a few moments the audience forgets they are only looking at the back of a human body.

A ritual, poetic space opens up that makes room for associations, images and feelings – a channel through bodily aesthetics. What is seen seems unreal, transforms, becomes a projection surface and a mirror for the audience’s emotions, and breaks their expectations. Uncomfortable is an exploration of boundaries and limitations, of reduction and the power of precise use: less is more. A solid technique in waving and fusion dance carries the atmosphere.

My role in the piece

Concept, choreography and performance are mine. I designed and made the costume especially for the piece – a full circle skirt of heavy black jersey: it extends the silhouette into the unnatural and grounds the figure on the floor while all focus stays on back and skin.
