Undini Uncut

Contemporary shadow theatre for young audiences aged 6+ · 45 minutes

My role Concept · Performance (four characters) · Costume and set design · Film

The Little Mermaid, finally uncut: queer, loud and with a voice of her own.

Playing loads the video from YouTube, which transfers data to Google.

Undini Uncut retells the fairytale of the Little Mermaid – queer, poetic and with a wink. Three performers weave shadow theatre, circus, dance, drag and live music into a journey through sea, shadows and finding yourself.

The piece begins as a poetic retelling of the classic tale – including the bitter original ending, long before Disney. But halfway through, the story tips: the children in the audience are invited to continue Undini’s story with their own ideas and understanding, and their suggestions flow straight into the action. Together, an emancipated, empowering ending emerges: Undini finds a new friend and finally her voice again, realising that speaking for yourself is one of life’s greatest strengths.

In this way Undini Uncut deals with belonging, friendship and queer self-determination: the production enchants first – and then asks, with humour, who fairytales belong to and who gets to retell them.

My role in the piece

Besides costume and set design, I play four characters in Undini Uncut: the creepy sea witch, the arrogant prince, an anglerfish host and Lady Gogo, a pink explosion of glitter. Fast scene changes, costume transformations and sound effects make the lightning switches between characters possible.
